Richardson and Francis Rupert) and their families, as well as one letter from a Confederate soldier, William T. Bickham, to his cousin; see additional letters from and to Joseph D. Richardson in the collection.

He states how happy he was to have a visit from his old friend from Beverly, Colonel Snider, and reports that he sends his love to Charley Oliver, from whom he received papers. He signs the letter, "from your goodlooking son. Richardson served with the Beverly, NJ 10th Regiment of Infantry Volunteers during the Civil War; he enlisted in 1861, was promoted to first sergeant on May 4, 1864, and died at Cedar Creek, Virginia on November 7, 1864 of wounds received while foraging.
