|a In this letter, Wise writes to the purchasers of his copy of Siena (possibly the 1888 forgery) and offers a copy of Cleopatra (published in Cornhill in 1886) for sale. He also states that he will enclose three Swinburne letters which are not for sale, but which the buyer may peruse. An infamous bibliophile, book collector, and forger, Wise collected authentic first editions and letters, as well as producing forgeries, or creating counterfeit works by writers like Browning, Shelley, and Swinburne. He stole about three hundred leaves from pre-Restoration dramas from the British Museum.
