Summary: | Artist on Film is a series of concentrated, high-quality films showing visual artists at work. One gets a sense of being there as documentary maker Hans van Seventer takes the viewer into the intimate environment of these artists, where we look over their shoulders as they discuss what motivates them, explain how they work and share their personal insights. Many produce figurative work, illustrating the rich variety and versatility within this genre. Some are sculptors who use wood, stone, clay or paper; some are photographers, spatial designers, furniture makers, and of course painters. These film vignettes, in themselves works of art, offer inspiration to aspiring artists. They are likewise a valuable resource tool for use in education - and they are good entertainment! Showing the process by which a work of art comes into being, they are compact and intense, able to capture and hold the interest of the viewer and make him wish for more. Although some are from elsewhere in Europe or the United States, most of the artists are Dutch, following in Holland's strong and well-known tradition in the visual arts. Because they are examples of the continuity of this tradition they have not gone out of style, but have maintained their value and relevance. |
