Amerikan Başkanlığı kurumunu iki dönem, sekiz yıl sonra üçüncü dönem başkanlıktan vazgeçerek şekillendirerek buna ilişkin ülkesinde bir gelenek oluşturmuştur. Bu gelenek Franklin D. Roosevelt'e kadar devam ederek, sonrasında anayasalaştırıldı. George Washington, hakkında en çok eser yazılan ilk 100 kişi listesinde 16. sırada yer almaktadır.
