Randall Thompson

Randall Thompson (21. huhtikuuta 1899 New York – 9. heinäkuuta 1984 Boston) oli yhdysvaltalainen säveltäjä.

Thompson opiskeli Harvardin yliopistossa ja sai sittemmin opetusta Ernest Blochilta. Hänen opettajiinsa kuului Harvardissa Edward Burlingame Hill. Vuonna 1922 hän sai stipendin American Academyyn (Rooma), jossa opiskeli Gian Francesco Malipieron johdolla. Hän opetti useissa korkeakouluissa ja johti vuosina 1939–1941 Curtis Institute of Musicia. Tämän jälkeen hän työskenteli Princetonin ja Harvardin yliopistoissa, joista jälkimmäisestä jäi emeritusprofessoriksi vuonna 1965.

Thompsonin tyyli oli konservatiivinen ja uusklassinen. Hänet tunnetaan varsinkin kuorosävellyksistään; näihin kuuluvat ''Alleluia'' a cappella -kuorolle (1940) ja ''The Testament of Freedom'' miesäänille ja orkesterille (1942, sanat Thomas Jefferson). Kolmesta sinfoniasta erityisesti toinen menestyi. Muihin Thompsonin teoksiin kuuluvat yksinäytöksinen ooppera ''Solomon and Balkis'' (1942) ja oratorio ''The Nativity According to St. Luke'' (1965).
