George Gershwin
fou un compositor i pianista estatunidenc. Nasqué a Brooklyn com a Jacob Gershowitz, d'una família jueva immigrant d'origen rus.Autor de cançons de consum i obres de teatre musical per a Broadway, en col·laboració amb el seu germà gran i escriptor Ira Gershwin, va compondre una òpera basada en jazz de gran èxit, ''Porgy and Bess'' (1935), i obres simfòniques, com ''Rhapsody in Blue'' (1924), el Concert en fa (1925) o ''Un americà a París'' (1928).
La cantant de jazz Ella Fitzgerald va gravar moltes de les cançons de Gershwin en un disc de 1959: ''Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook''. Altres intèrprets com ara Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Judy Garland o Nina Simone també han cantat i gravat les cançons de Gershwin.
